The car, Volvo indicates, was designed to emulate lifeguard vehicles seen at many California beaches. The four-door SUV features a 5-inch-lift suspension for improved ground clearance, heavily modified body panels, and specially-made oversized tires with a tread designed for increased grip on loose and sandy soil. The XC70 also includes first-aid equipment and custom rescue surfboards.

It features a six-cylinder bio ethanol engine, designed to cut emissions of fossil carbon dioxide by up to 80 percent. The XC60 Concept maintains Volvo's focus on safety with its new "City Safe" active collision avoidance system, designed to minimize or avoid damage from low-speed rear-impact collisions. Additional features include a more "pumped-up" design, enlarged iron mark in the grille and a new tailgate design. Furthermore, a pony-tail slot in the head restraints and backrests, first introduced a couple of years ago in the Volvo YCC (Your Concept Car), has been extended in the XC60 Concept all the way down the back to provide enhanced ventilation and improved rearward vision. The production-version of the Volvo XC60 is planned to reach showrooms at the beginning of 2009.

Volvo's ReCharge Concept, a plug-in hybrid with individual electric wheel motors, can drive an estimated 100 kilometers before the vehicle's four-cylinder Flexifuel engine is needed to power the car and recharge the battery. When driving beyond the car's battery life, fuel consumption may vary from 0 to 5.5 liters per 100 km depending on the distance driven. Volvo researchers say the ReCharge Concept can lower carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 66 percent compared to other hybrids. In addition to operating on battery energy, the ReCharge Concept can also accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 9 seconds and reach top speeds of 160 km/h. The vehicle, which will debut in a specially-designed Volvo C30 at the IAA motor show in Frankfurt, was developed at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center in Camarillo, CA.

Volvo Cars unveils its new City Safety system, which is designed to help drivers avoid or minimize damage from low-speed rear-impact collisions. If the system senses that a collision is imminent, the car will brake automatically through hydraulic pump activation. Depending on the speed of the two vehicles, the system can either help reduce speed as much as possible before the impact or stop the collision entirely. The City Safety System will be on the market within two years.
