Volvo's ReCharge Concept, a plug-in hybrid with individual electric wheel motors, can drive an estimated 100 kilometers before the vehicle's four-cylinder Flexifuel engine is needed to power the car and recharge the battery. When driving beyond the car's battery life, fuel consumption may vary from 0 to 5.5 liters per 100 km depending on the distance driven. Volvo researchers say the ReCharge Concept can lower carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 66 percent compared to other hybrids. In addition to operating on battery energy, the ReCharge Concept can also accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 9 seconds and reach top speeds of 160 km/h. The vehicle, which will debut in a specially-designed Volvo C30 at the IAA motor show in Frankfurt, was developed at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center in Camarillo, CA.

Opel, a division of General Motors (GM), has unveiled Flextreme, an eco-friendly concept car designed to emit less than 40 grams per kilometer of carbon dioxide. The electric vehicle, which debuted at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany, is built upon E-Flex, GM's electric vehicle architecture, and uses a lithium-ion battery that can run up to 55 kilometers (km) at a time. Flextreme also incorporates versatile storage space via its rear-hinged back doors, transparent roof, tailgate doors and luggage compartment located beneath the vehicle's floor. Prior to its European debut in Frankfurt, the Flextreme was presented at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2007, with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine that can run on E85, and then again at the Shanghai Motor Show in April 2007, as an electric concept car with hydrogen fuel cell propulsion. The concept car presented in Frankfurt contains two engines: a battery-operated engine and a 1.3-liter CDTI diesel engine.

General Motors has opened a new $10 million rollover crash testing facility in Michigan. GM officials say the premise of the facility is to reduce the number of rollover-related injuries and deaths by developing sensors for airbags. An estimated 2 percent of all crashes involve rollovers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. From this 2 percent, an estimated 10,000 people die annually, a number that comprises 40 percent of all automotive crash fatalities a year. Almost 200 crash tests a year are expected to occur at this new facility, which is the first plant of its kind to be owned by an automaker.
